You will not go on holidays ! (part 3)

On the following morning, Cassie and Lily are sitting in the kitchen, having their breakfast when Pamela appears on her crutches.
“- Hello, both of you !” she says, a smile on the lips.
“- Pam !”, Lily says, visibly surprised. “you succeeded in coming down alone !  No problem ?”
“- No, no !  And I have spent a rather good night.  I think that you were right yesterday : it will not be a problem to spend 2 weeks holidays with Bryan with a broken leg.  It will not prevent us of anything”.  And she starts laughing, knowing what this “anything” means after such a long separation.

Cassie helps Pamela to sit down and brings her a breakfast.
“- Look at this, Pam !”, Lily says, showing her red sandals, the ones Pamela was wearing when she fell from the stepladder.  “You have broken the heel of your right sandal in your fall, yesterday.  Shall I throw them away ?”
“- Yes, I think I will never wear them again !”

The 3 girls spend half an hour in the kitchen, having breakfast, discussing and laughing.  Pamela’s leg is throbbing from time to time but it is really bearable and she takes painkillers to ease the pain.
Then, Pamela gets up to go to the bathroom, after what she intends to starts her luggage.  She will need more time than expected, so she needs to start it now.

What happens at that moment ?  Three sounds  : Oops, then a snap and a piercing yell !
“- Oops !” said by Cassie when she steps on something with her high wooden heel clog.
Then, a clear frightening snap of something, followed by Pamela’s piercing yell : Cassie has accidentally walked on Pamela’s toes, jutting out her cast, and she has certainly broken some of them.
Pamela collapses on a chair :
“- Aaargh, aarrgh, mytoesmytoesmytoes… Owww ! owwww, oww !”
“- Pam, I’m sorry, I’m sorry !  I didn’t do it on purpose !  Oh, Pam, I’m sorry, I’m sorry !” Cassie can but say.
She then cautiously takes hold of Pamela’s foot and holds it in her right hand.
“- Ow, my toes, look at my toes, ouch !  It hurts so much !  Ow, Cassie, you have broken my toes”

And it is obvious that some of Pam’s toes are broken.  They are crooked, bruised and some are already swollen.
Pamela is so weak and in shock of what has just happened that she is unable to move or to stand up.

“- We must go to the hospital, Pam”,   Lily gently says.  “Your toes are injured and we must have them examined”
Pamela can but nod in agreement but she is in such a pain that she is really unable to go upstairs to get dressed and she tells her friends.
Within 2 minutes, Pamela is dressed in the kitchen : a T-shirt, the short jeans skirt and a sports shoe on her right foot.
Pamela then grabs her crutches but at the first step, the slight movement of her broken leg sends a sharp pain in her injured toes and she immediately stops dead.
“- I… I don’t know if.. if I will be able to reach the car”, she whispers to her friends.
Cassie and Lily first look at her, wondering what to do, then Cassie proposes :
“ You will lean on us : one arm on Lily’s shoulder who will be on your right and one arm on my shoulder, while I am on your left.  You will hop on your good leg and on our side, we will support you.  Shall we try ?”
And Pamela puts her arms on her friends’ shoulders and holding her casted leg in front of her, she starts move forward cautiously.  She heavily leans on her friends, moaning loudly at each step but they slowly succeed in reaching the car.
But what happened there ?  Pamela thought she had to make one additional step whereas Lily opened the rear door of the car and Pamela violently strikes her newly injured toes on the door.
She writhes in agony and cannot retain a piercing cry of pain.  They all three stay there a few seconds in order that Pamela can get her breath back.
After what, she finally seats on the rear seat of the car.  In tears, she leans towards her toes and discovers the disaster : her little toe looks like a red sausage and has certainly 2 or 3 times its normal size, the following one seems like curled up under her plaster, while the next one is pointing to the sky and is crooked.  The next one is also curled up under her plaster and her big toe is extremely swollen, extremely bruised and it looks like if there are 2 extra-joints on it.
Instinctively, Pamela tries to wiggle it but nothing happens !
“- Oh, God”, she thinks, “all my toes are broken, I am sure that all my toes are broken !”

At their arrival in the Emergency, Pamela is now able to walk on her crutches but she nearly falls when a little kid nearly hits her cast.
They finally seat and wait that someone takes care of Pamela.  It takes nearly one hour before a doctor arrives.  Pamela is in agony.  She has not taken any painkillers and her toes are giving her hell and even her leg is throbbing.
They go to an examination room and the doctor asks them what has happened to Pamela’s toes.
“- I have accidentally walked on them”, Cassie says, ashamed.
“- With that shoes ?”
“- Er, yes”, Cassie answers looking at her heavy shoes with the wooden platform.
“- Nothing surprising then that her toes are so crushed !”

Pamela is wheeled to the X-Ray where the session is painful.  The technician must move her toes in order to make the X-Ray and Pamela can feel her bones grate one on each others.
She cries several times in pain and tenses up during the session.
When she is back in the examination room, she feels relieved to get some painkillers, for the pain in her toes but also in her leg.
The doctor is back very quickly with the X-Ray and he shows them that all the toes are broken : totally, 9 fractures !  
“-I suppose that you will have to re-align them”, Pamela says softly.
“- Yes, I hope it will not hurt too much but it is not funny, I know”.
And he takes hold of Pamela’s foot.  Pamela, because of her cast, is unable to move her leg.
She tries to clench her teeth but it is really too painful and she cannot retain her tears and loud cries of pain while the doctor pulls, twists and straighten her poor toes.  The worse is the big one because the doctor needs 4 attempts before it is re-aligned.  

Then, Pamela is sent to the casting room and one hour later she slowly walks on her crutches to the parking with a bigger cast on her leg.  In fact, mainly on her foot.  Her toes are no more jutting out from the cast, they are now put on a kind of plate and the big toe is completely covered by plaster.
